Dog & Litter Registration

Introduction

This page discusses dog and litter registration under the Tamaskan Dog Register, Inc. It does not cover the registration of breeders or kennels under the TDR. For information on the registration of a TDR kennel (as a TDR breeder), please refer to the page, Kennel Registration & Renewal.

To register a new litter, please see the Litter Registration page. To register a single dog, please go to the Single Dog Registration page.

The TDR reserves the authority to modify the requirements of any existing registration types, in addition to adding new registration types, as needed. All changes will be announced accordingly.

This document is intended for all parties interested in processes and policies of the Tamaskan Dog Register, Inc. To download a PDF version of these guidelines, please see here.

For the previous (2019) version of registration guidelines, please see here.

1 Background

The Tamaskan Dog Register, Inc. (TDR) registers dogs for two main reasons:

  1. To acknowledge and track the international population of Tamaskan Dogs, for the purposes of health recording and the furtherance of the TDR breeding program and the Tamaskan Dog breed; and
  2. To denote the breeding clearance of Tamaskan Dogs within the registry’s population.

All TDR-registered dogs are assigned a uniquely identifiable “number” within the registry. This “number” is an alphanumeric sequence that stays with the dog for the duration of its life. TDR-registered dogs may participate in TDR-sponsored events. As a recognized international Tamaskan Dog registry, TDR registration also allows registered animals to seek further registration with other organizations which in turn handle entry qualifications to events at non-TDR venues.

Thus, any dog who seeks registration with the TDR must be one of the following:

  1. Offspring of existing, registered TDR dogs;
  2. Non-TDR-registered Tamaskan Dogs or dogs of other breeds who have been individually approved for the breeding program; or
  3. Tamaskan Dogs of proven lineage.

Prior to registration, all required information and documented compliance with TDR Breeding Regulations (as needed) on a specific dog must be on file with the TDR. If registering for breeding purposes, the requirements for individual dogs may vary depending on the animal; please refer to the TDR Breeding Regulations for details.

Additionally, all dogs seeking registration with the TDR must be microchipped with a reputable service. The microchip’s service provider and identifier must be provided to the TDR.

Office of Responsibility

All registrations with the TDR are handled by the seated TDR Registrar, who can be reached at [email protected]. The position of “Registrar” is that of a named Officer within the TDR business charter, whose purpose is to document and maintain the historical record of dogs within the breed.

The Registrar works closely with the TDR Board of Directors, the TDR Committee of Breeders, and directly with TDR Breeders and TDR dog owners. This helps to ensure that all information for a dog and its registration is correct, and that registrations are not granted within a vacuum of a single committee or individual.

If any breeder or owner feels that there is an issue or concern with the seated Registrar, please send an email directly to the TDR Board of Directors, at [email protected].

2 Registration Types

The Tamaskan Dog Register, Inc. (TDR) recognizes the following types of registrations for Tamaskan Dogs and dogs used within the TDR’s breeding program.

NOTE: The registration types discussed herein refer explicitly to “registration under the TDR.” Registrations granted by other registries do not apply, unless otherwise noted.

2.1 Full

Full: Effective January 1, 2024, FULL registration may be granted to all G2 and greater litters, provided the parents are also of FULL Registration and meet the requirements stipulated by the Tamaskan Dog Register (TDR) Breeding Regulations. G2 or higher Tamaskan Dogs may participate in the TDR breeding program, in adherence with the TDR Breeding Regulations. Dogs with FULL registration must complete with passing scores all TDR-mandated testing and submit the official results to the TDR Committee of Breeders (CoB) for final review and approval prior to any breeding taking place.

FULL registration is not an automatic approval for a Tamaskan Dog to participate in the TDR breeding program. The TDR CoB reserves the right to grant or deny permission to any dog to participate within the TDR breeding program, based on the results of a dog’s health testing, temperament testing, structural evaluation, and/or any other known risks possessed by the dog itself or any of its relatives. New or updated information regarding the health of a breeding dog or its relatives may constitute a review by the CoB regarding the breeding rights of that dog and its relatives at any time.
Please see the TDR Breeding Regulations page for more information.

Note: No Temperament or Structure evaluations are required for G2 and higher breeding dogs, although the TDR Committee of Breeders still strongly recommends these additional evaluations.

Effective January 1, 2020, and expiring December 31, 2023: FULL registration was granted to dogs who are the offspring of FULL x “FD” FOUNDATION DOG registrations, provided that all other requirements for FULL registration were met. These G1 Tamaskan Dogs were still required complete health, temperament, and structure testing prior to breeding, as stipulated within the TDR Breeding Regulations.

2.2 Conditional

Conditional: Tamaskan Dogs with CONDITIONAL registration may not participate in the TDR breeding program under this registration status, unless specifically granted a written Exception by the CoB prior to any breeding taking place. Should they wish to participate in the TDR breeding program, Tamaskan Dogs with CONDITIONAL registration are required to submit for CoB review the results for the testing and evaluation of the dog’s health, temperament, and structure, along with a written petition to amend the dog to FULL registration status for the purpose of breeding. Details for all health, temperament, and structural testing and evaluations may be found on the Breeding Regulations page of the TDR website.

A Tamaskan Dog may be granted CONDITIONAL registration by the TDR under the following conditions:

  1. All eligible G1 registered litters; or
  2. By CoB written Exception ONLY: Any litter produced by the pairing of FULL Registration or CONDITIONAL Registration breeding dogs, but one OR both parents have not updated or completed one or more of the health requirements as stated within the TDR Breeding Regulations by the time the mating took place. The offspring of dog(s) who received a written Exception granted by the CoB under TDR Breeding Regulations for an incomplete or late health test will still be issued CONDITIONAL status.

Note: Prior to January 1, 2020, CONDITIONAL registration was issued to the offspring produced by the pairing of a Tamaskan Dog with FULL registration to a dog with FOUNDATION or CONDITIONAL registration, i.e., the result of an “outcross litter.”

Amending CONDITIONAL Registration Status:

CONDITIONAL registration of an individual G1 registered Tamaskan Dog may be amended to FULL registration, provided that all of the following conditions are met:

  1. The owner chooses to breed the dog; AND
  2. The dog passes all requirements for breeding per the TDR Breeding Regulations; AND
  3. The owner formally requests in writing the amendment to the currently seated TDR Registrar.

Approval to amend the CONDITIONAL registration status of a G1 registered dog will be granted on an individual basis. Littermates’ or other full siblings’ registration statuses will not be automatically amended when the petitioned dog’s status is amended.

CONDITIONAL registration of an individual G2+ registered Tamaskan Dog whose parents are both Tamaskan Dogs with FULL registration may be amended to also have FULL registration, under the following conditions:

  1. The dog passes all criteria for approval for the TDR’s breeding program.
    • In this scenario, the individual Tamaskan Dog will be amended to FULL registration status, but this does not alter or affect the registration status of any littermates or full siblings.
  2. Both parents of the dog pass the criteria for approval for the TDR’s breeding program, and the seated TDR Registrar is notified in writing by the litter’s breeder of the request to amend.
    • In this scenario, CONDITIONAL registration of the litter was issued due to incomplete or outdated health testing of the parents by the time the breeding took place, OR due to the lack of a written Exception from the CoB granting permission for the breeding to take place. As such, an approved request to amend the CONDITIONAL registration status of a single G2+ dog who was produced under these circumstances to FULL will also move all dogs within that litter to FULL registration.

Note: The above conditions for amendment remain applicable to dogs with CONDITIONAL registration from a FULL x FOUNDATION combination, if the CONDITIONAL registration status was issued prior to January 1, 2020.

2.3. Limited

Limited: Tamaskan Dogs with LIMITED registration may not participate in the TDR breeding program under any circumstances. At the time a Breeder is submitting their litter’s registration documentation to the seated TDR Registrar, the Breeder may petition the seated TDR Registrar and TDR Committee of Breeders to apply LIMITED registration to any individual dog in a litter under the following conditions:

  • a. The status is explicitly requested by the dog’s breeder due to:
    • i. The dog has uncertain lineage unverifiable by DNA maternity and/or paternity testing; or
    • ii. Has a noted discrepancy in its DNA profile; or
    • iii. Has a known, documented heritable health condition that should not be propagated, as noted within the TDR Breeding Regulations; or
    • iv. Has a morphologically disqualifying feature as noted within the TDR’s Tamaskan Dog Breed Standard.

All Breeder petitions for LIMITED registration statuses to individuals in the Breeder’s litter who meet the
aforementioned conditions will be reviewed by the seated TDR Registrar and the TDR Committee of Breeders prior to granting the status to any individual dog. LIMITED Registration may be granted to an individual dog seeking TDR registration under the following circumstances, at the discretion of the TDR CoB and seated TDR Registrar:

  • a. The dog has uncertain lineage unverified by DNA maternity and/or paternity testing; or
  • b. Has a noted discrepancy in its DNA profile; or
  • c. Has a known, heritable health condition that should not be propagated, as noted within the TDR Breeding Regulations; or
  • d. Has a morphologically disqualifying feature as noted within the TDR’s Tamaskan Dog Breed Standard.

A dog may not be amended from any other registration status to LIMITED status if the owner decides that the dog will not be bred.

LIMITED registration statuses are not typically amendable. If the breeder and owner believe that a dog’s LIMITED registration status should be amended, a written petition must be presented to the seated TDR Registrar and the TDR Committee of Breeders. Reasons that would allow (but do not guarantee) a change in registration status include, but are not limited to:

  • a. The dog “outgrew” a disqualifying morphological feature;
  • b. Progress in genetic testing, or the acquisition of DNA verified lineage, is able to definitively prove previously uncertain lineage; or
  • c. Progress/knowledge/new genetic tests in heritable conditions makes a previous health concern a non-issue.

2.3 Unsanctioned Litters

UNSANCTIONED LITTERS shall be assigned LIMITED registration at the discretion of the TDR Committee of Breeders upon review of all relevant information.

An UNSANCTIONED LITTER is hereby defined as a litter produced where one OR both parents fit into any of the following scenarios, with respect to the TDR or any other major Tamaskan Dog registry:

  • a. Unregistered Tamaskan Dogs who are the DNA verified offspring of registered Tamaskan Dogs;
  • b. Unregistered non-Tamaskan Dogs who have not been granted final approval as a Foundation Dog (“FD” or “XO” registration status) by the TDR Committee of Breeders at the time the mating took place, and no written Exception was granted by the TDR CoB prior to the mating taking place;
  • c. Registered Tamaskan Dogs who are explicitly denied permission to breed within the TDR breeding program by the TDR Committee of Breeders for any reason;
  • d. Tamaskan Dogs who cannot provide genetic proof of parentage to confirm the identities of both their sire and dam;
  • e. Tamaskan Dogs, registered externally to the TDR, who cannot provide their parents’ complete set of health tests and genetic proof of parentage as required by the other register(s) that the Tamaskan Dogs in question are registered with.

Should the TDR CoB find definitive proof that the circumstances surrounding the production of a litter have violated the TDR Breeder’s Code of Ethics and/or TDR Breeding Regulations without a specific written Exception granted by the TDR CoB prior to the mating taking place, the litter shall be labeled an UNSANCTIONED LITTER and will be assigned LIMITED registration. The registration status of the offspring shall not be amended under any circumstances.

The breeder and/or owner of a Tamaskan Dog from an UNSANCTIONED LITTER may not under any
circumstances petition the Committee of Breeders and/or seated TDR Registrar to amend the registration of any single dog or its littermates from LIMITED to CONDITIONAL or FULL.

Litters produced by any Tamaskan Dog(s) with LIMITED registration shall NOT be eligible for TDR
registration of any category. The resulting litter, be it accidental or purposeful, may NOT be referred to or advertised as Tamaskan Dogs, as stated in the TDR Breeder’s Ethics Contract.

2.4 Foundation

Foundation: Effective June 1, 2019, “FD” FOUNDATION DOG registration status is granted exclusively to non-Tamaskan Dogs who are approved under the TDR’s Outcross Program. Specifically, a FOUNDATION dog is defined as a non-Tamaskan dog who does not have DNA verified registered Tamaskan Dog ancestry (with any major register) within three (3) generations.

Dogs with “FD” FOUNDATION registration have explicit approval to breed under the TDR’s Outcross breeding program, as this status is only issued to dogs who have passed all requirements as stated within the TDR Breeding Regulations. However, the use of dogs with FOUNDATION registration status for breeding shall adhere to the guidelines within the TDR Breeding Regulations and the number of approved litters shall be limited.

FOUNDATION dogs MAY NOT be referred to or advertised as Tamaskan Dogs and MAY NOT be represented or entered as a Tamaskan Dog in any competitive conformation shows or other dog sports. It is acceptable to refer to “FD” registered dogs as an “Outcross” or “Foundation Dog” in relation to the TDR’s breeding program.

2.6 Partial Outcross

Partial Outcross: Effective January 1, 2024, “XO” PARTIAL OUTCROSS registration shall be used to denote partial-Tamaskan Dog ancestry for outcross dogs who meet ALL of the following requirements:

  1. Have within three (3) generations of their pedigree one or more Tamaskan Dog ancestors registered with the TDR or other major recognized Tamaskan Dog Registry;
  2. Have DNA verifiable parentage for each generation tracing back to at least one of the aforementioned registered Tamaskan Dog ancestor(s);
  3. Meet the health, temperament, and structure evaluation requirements specified in the TDR Breeding Regulations; and
  4. Are granted final approval for PARTIAL OUTCROSS registration by the TDR Committee of Breeders.

Dogs meeting ALL of these requirements who are granted final approval (not just pre-approval) for PARTIAL OUTCROSS registration by the TDR Committee of Breeders shall receive an “XO” denotation in place of the registration’s usual “G#” or “FD” designation. The assignment of XO registration does not extend to any of the XO dog’s full siblings and/or littermates. This registration is assigned by the TDR Committee of Breeders on a case-by-case basis only to the individual dog proposed.

XO dogs MAY NOT be referred to or advertised as purebred and/or registered Tamaskan Dogs and MAY NOT be represented or entered as a Tamaskan Dog in any competitive conformation shows or other dog sports. It is acceptable to refer to XO registered dogs as “Outcrosses” or “Partial Outcrosses” in relation to the TDR’s breeding program.

PARTIAL OUTCROSS registrations are not amendable to having a “G#” notation under any circumstances.

Dogs who cannot provide DNA verified parentage for each generation tracing back to at least one Tamaskan Dog ancestor that is registered with the TDR or other major recognized Tamaskan Dog Registry appearing in the proposed dog’s pedigree within three (3) generations, ARE NOT eligible for PARTIAL OUTCROSS registration and must be proposed as a fully unrelated Outcross under the “FD” FOUNDATION DOG registration status.

Due to the high likelihood of there being a greater than average amount of shared genetics between
registered Tamaskan Dogs and dogs of similar genetic breed ancestry or admixture, a Coefficient of Relation (COR) test is NOT acceptable as a method to establish verified Tamaskan Dog ancestry. Direct parentage confirmation is required for each generation tracing back to at least one registered Tamaskan Dog ancestor registered with the TDR or other major registry.

PARTIAL OUTCROSS Breeding Restrictions:

“XO” PARTIAL OUTCROSS dogs may only breed with dogs who have the following registration statuses:

  • a. G1+ registered Tamaskan Dogs registered with the TDR; or
  • b. FD FOUNDATION DOGS registered with the TDR

All litters produced by either of the aforementioned breeding combinations shall be registered as G1 Tamaskan Dogs.

Additional PARTIAL OUTCROSS breeding restriction:

  • a. An “XO” PARTIAL OUTCROSS dog may not be bred to another “XO” PARTIAL OUTCROSS dog, unless a written Exception is specifically granted by the CoB prior to the breeding taking place.
    • i. Should permission be granted for such a breeding to take place, the offspring shall be registered as G1 Tamaskan Dogs.

Please note that the registration status assigned to dogs by the TDR may not always be reciprocated by other major recognized Tamaskan Dog registries. Outside registries maintain the right to assign registration as they deem appropriate, according to their respective rules and regulations. Should TDR breeders or owners seek registration for their Partial Outcross Dog(s), Foundation Dog(s), or Tamaskan Dog(s) or litter(s), with outside registries, the TDR cannot guarantee any registration status that may be available or offered by outside registries. The same holds true for all dogs registered with outside major recognized Tamaskan Dog registries who seek TDR registration. The TDR maintains the right to assign or withhold registration to all dogs and/or litters seeking TDR registration, as deemed appropriate by the currently seated TDR Registrar and TDR Committee of Breeders, in accordance with the TDR’s rules and regulations.

[1]A “Major Registry” is defined by the TDR as a recognized Tamaskan Dog registry whose standards of practice meet or exceed the TDR’s published Breeding Regulations and Code of Ethics. As of late 2021, these registries include: Netherlands Tamaskan Club (NTC), Tamaskan Germany (TG), International Tamaskan Register (ITR), and Interessengemeinschaft Tamaskan (IGT)

3 Registering Non-TDR Dogs

The Tamaskan Dog Register, Inc. will register Tamaskan Dogs from other major registries. Proof of parentage, parent health tests, and original registration paperwork from the external registry will be required of all extra-registry petitions.

If registering for breeding purposes, the incoming dog must also meet or exceed the TDR’s health testing requirements, as specified within the TDR Breeding Regulations. The incoming dog must also adhere to the standards established within the regulations. All other registration assignments will apply the conditions noted above.

Dogs seeking registration from unrecognized organizations, or if parentage or parent health testing cannot be acquired, will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If approved, these dogs will automatically be designated as a Partial Outcross registration.

NOTE: The TDR does not require the parent(s) of a dog petitioning for registration to be TDR-registered. However, proof of registration of the parent(s) within the external registry will be required.

4 Amendments

Amendments to a dog’s registration status must meet conditions as outlined specifically within each status’s description and be presented to the seated TDR Registrar using the appropriate TDR form. All requests for amendments need to be formally presented, and will be documented and filed with the TDR.

Registration statuses of individual dogs will NOT be amended for an individual dog if the dog is physically or physiologically unable to breed, e.g., if the dog has been spayed or neutered prior to the request for amendment. If an individual dog who is physically or physiologically unable to breed is a member of a litter that is moving from CONDITIONAL to FULL registration, the individual’s status shall also be updated.

Questions as to whether a dog meets an amendment condition may be addressed directly to the seated TDR Registrar.

As needed, the Registrar will forward any or all cases to the appropriate parties for review, prior to making changes.

5 Paperwork

Registrations include the issuance of an official TDR-stamped certificate stating the dog’s pedigree, owner, and registration status. Paperwork can mailed to either the breeder, or directly to the owner (if requested).

This is done at a modest fee, to support the continued efforts of the TDR. Fees must be paid prior to the assignment of a registration number to a dog, or the generation of the dog’s certificate. The fee schedule is noted in the document entitled, TDR Fee Schedule.

5.1 Authenticity

Authentic TDR registration paperwork, as of July 2019, has the following features:

  1. A gold stamp embossed with the TDR seal;
  2. A TDR watermark in the background;
  3. A colored border denoting the registration status;
  4. An alphanumeric sequence in the bottom left corner; and
  5. A double-sided printout, with the registration on one side, and owner information on the opposite side.

5.2 Copies of Paperwork

Copies of a registration may be sent to either the dog’s breeder or owner, by sending a request to the seated TDR Registrar.

5.3 Updating Paperwork

The seated TDR Registrar should be contacted for any updates required for a registration that is not a correction. Although not necessary, an update includes items such as a change of address, rehomed dogs, etc.

A records update request can be made to the TDR’s database without requesting new paperwork. The TDR Fee Schedule pertains strictly to an update that also requires the issuance of new papers.

5.4 Corrections to Paperwork

The seated TDR Registrar should be contacted immediately if any errors or issues are noticed within an issued registration. All corrections will be filed with the TDR. Please note that “errors” do not include requests for updates or copies.
